Modules
COIS51088 Application Design and Development
In this module you will study the strategies, tools and techniques which are used to specify and implement enterprise systems. The module will introduce you to structured analysis and design and to agile analysis and design techniques. You will use core and advanced SQL to build an object-relational database to provide the backend to an information system.
COCS50719 Operating Systems
The module aims to give an understanding of the underlying principles of computer operating systems, and their relation to hardware components and software applications. Examples will be drawn from real systems throughout and will cover a range of host devices including PCs, smart phones and tablets.
Students will develop the necessary skills to install, manage and use a variety of modern operating systems. This is an important foundation for a career in the IT sector.
This module has a substantial taught component but is suitable for both classroom based or work based awards.
COIS51087 Project Management
IT Projects have a reputation for being difficult to manage, and instances of IT projects that have ended disastrously late and/or over budget are often reported. However, surveys show that manafers working on many of these projects have not received adequate training in basi project management, however good they may be technically. This module is intended to overcome this problem and to give you, as a graduate, a 'running start' in a project team and to allow you to use your technical skills to maximum effect within the project environment.
The modules takes a structured approach to project management (PM) that refers to several PM methods that may be found in industry while following a well-tried set of steps that make a complex subject easier to learn. You will learn some of the most common PM techniques in a workshop environment before practicing them in a realistic assignment situation using some of the latest PM software. The general aim of the module is to give a good understanding of the phases of managing a typical IT project by integrating the technical and human factors into a realistic approach that can be fun. The expected outcome is to make you a useful member of an IT project team with the potential to become a successful IT project manager.
COCS50724 Networks and Protocols
This module starts with an overview of the development and operation of computer networks covering data communication and network infrastructure. Then it moves on to communication architecture and protocol layering to prepare the grounds for computer networking software, services and protocols.
This module is also supported by practical work which involves work areas of computer networks. It uses tools such as network simulation software and students will be able to model and simulate appropriate computer networks.
COIS51090 Strategic Information Systems for Business
Information Systems (IS) are at the heart of all modern organisations. You will study how IS support the strategy and structure of organisations. Today, the IS operation is critical to the successful operation of organisations and the sudden loss/failure of them would put many companies in jeopardy. You will study how management plan to protect the IS resource and maintain its operation. Many companies gain competitive advantage through IS so managers have to be continually aware of new developments. You will study contemporary applications of IS and how to fit them into business strategy.
COIS51045 Enterprise Application Development
In this module you will study the strategies, tools and techniques which are used to specify and implement enterprise systems. Working in groups, you will develop a complete information systems application for a virtual company. The module will introduce you to structured analysis and design and to agile analysis and design techniques. You will use core and advanced SQL to build an object-relational database to provide the backend to an information system and you will use appropriate techniques to optimise and secure the database and provide user access.
COIS60624 Advanced Database Systems
This module will develop knowledge of current DBMS support for Information Systems. You will acquire the ability to make informed DBMS selection from a critical appreciation of key database issues. Theoretical and contextual material will be presented in lectures and tutorials. You will carry out academic research to complement the subject matter some of which will be integrated into the assessment. You will be provided with practical exercises to enable you to see how the theories are put into practice.
COCS60664 Interfacing and Distributed Computing Techniques
We all take the interaction of a computer with the real world as automatic but a lot of work goes on making those interfaces appear to be seamless. This module will look in detail at the links required to be made not just between peripherals and operating systems but also between multiple systems and also networks to networks.
COIS60760 Information Systems Engineering in Industry
This core module for the final year of the degree builds on the professional understanding and practices that you would have covered at earlier stages of your award. . It covers ideas and skills that underpin the development of commercial grade software products.
COIS61080 Entrepreneurship
The introductory stage of the module will be used to identify the special personal skills and knowledge expected to be the driving force in enterprising managers. This will be identified by blending the entrepreneurial and business management backgrounds of traditional theory. SME's the traditional spawning grounds of enterprise initiative will be examined on the basis of the appropriate organisational structure for enterprise development. You will learn to craft a business plan in the second part of the module; this is intended to encapsulate the overall beliefs and recommendations of the enterprising manager.
You will also examine how people and companies negotiate and can analyse and improve their negotiating techniques and positions.
COIS61029 Emerging Technologies and Concepts
In this module you will study emerging computer technologies and concepts together with research strategies and tools and techniques. You will evaluate new technologies & concepts and extensions to existing technologies & concepts and will produce a research paper and communicate your findings to the rest of the cohort through research seminars. You will share ideas and knowledge with your fellow students and will be expected to plan and carry out your own research in a field of your choosing.
COIS61184 Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
You will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of knowledge discovery and to current algorithms and techniques available to extract knowledge and identify patterns from raw data in the context of knowledge management.
COIS61185 Contemporary Issues in IT
You will be expected to undertake independent guided research in order to address a contemporary IT issue. This will extend your knowledge in a particular field to give you cutting-edge advantage in the workplace.
COIS60779 Knowledge Management in Organisations
Knowledge Management is a relatively new discipline that seeks to enable people in a range of organisations to work more effectively and intelligently, 'adding value' to and improving the organisations performance and outcomes. This module explores the theories and practices of knowledge management from an organisational perspective, promoting a view that sees knowledge as a valuable and shareable organisational resource that organisations can use for competition and/or collaboration.
The module examines the fundamentals of KM in organisations including the basic definitions and concepts of knowledge and knowledge management. It explores the organisational use of knowledge, and analyses some models and strategies of knowledge management and their application to the characteristics of some typical organisations.
The module examines the development of innovation and organisational learning and the exploitation of intellectual capital as a form of organisational knowledge. It provides an overview of the role and application of technology to knowledge management and reviews the technologies that are available to facilitate knowledge management in organisations.
COIS60779 Final Year Project
The overall aim of the project module is to provide an opportunity for you to undertake a significant task on an individual basis and to showcase your talents gained throughout your award in a practical manner.
